The New York Times reports that Arizona Senator, Republican front-runner and supposed GOP Presidential Nominee, John McCain, 71 was allegedly involved with lobbyist Vicki Iseman, 40. This relationship dates back eight years to Mr. McCain's first Presidential run in 2000. Several of his advisors tried to keep Ms. Iseman at a distance from the Senator back then for fear that this relationship would ruin his presidential ambitions given that the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal was still fresh in the American conscience and had created a political outrage cloaked as an attack on morality and ethics in the White House by the GOP. The further implication of ethical violations would damage Sen. McCain’s campaign beyond repair since in addition to the appearance of the war hero's involvement in an extramarital affair, the lobbyist in question also had many clients who appeared before the Senate Committee which was headed by Senator McCain.
JIM RUTENBERG, MARILYN W. THOMPSON, DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and STEPHEN LABATON co-authors of the NYT article add that although Sen. John McCain claimed that he was not embedded with Washington lobbyists and conducted business aboveboard there is supposed evidence to the contrary which spans over the years since his unfortunate ties to the Keating Five scandal. After all, it was McCain who had fought for stricter regulations of lobbyist and big business influence on government and the NYT reveals that he has flown on many a corporate jet owned by the moneyed executives seeking his favor, including one executive who was a client of Ms. Iseman's.
Will this tarnish the Senator's reputation? McCain's campaign has already been seen as lackluster within the GOP and many have stated their unhappiness with the entire field of presidential candidates for the party in this election cycle. What does this mean for the Republican Party in the race for the Presidency? Will this be used as fodder for Huckabee’s flagging campaign, to now give him a real reason to stay in the race? Will they retreat from their paltry support of Sen. McCain and somehow try to revive the Romney campaign as Pat Buchanan subtly hinted at on MSNBC’s Countdown?
Republicans and Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign have already suggested that the present day Democratic front-runner Senator Barack Obama would not be able to handle any of the vetting that will certainly take place between now and November. But so far there has been little to damage his rise in popularity or his strength in the polls – even when pitted against McCain. This McCain scandal however, will give more than enough ammunition that the Democratic Party and any 527's could use to weaken Sen. John McCain's already shaky campaign. This would close the door on "negative" attacks against Obama since nothing (so far) pulled out of Obama’s “closet” comes close to the impropriety and ethics violations this New York Time's report suggests.
